How HLTV Fantasy works
HLTV Fantasy is the free fantasy game HLTV.org runs alongside most tier-1 Counter-Strike 2 tournaments. You pick a 5-player roster within a budget cap, and your team scores points based on how those real players perform during the actual matches of the event.
It's the most popular community fantasy game for CS2 — typically tens of thousands of players per event. Free to play, leaderboards reset per tournament, and there's no prize money — bragging rights only.
The basics
Each event, HLTV publishes a roster of all participating players, each assigned a "value" (cost in fantasy currency). You have a budget — typically around 1,000,000 — and you must pick 5 players whose combined value fits within budget.
Higher-priced players are usually the stars (donk, ZywOo, m0NESY). They'll likely score a lot, but they leave less budget for your remaining 4 picks. Lower-priced players are usually from smaller teams — risky but high-value if they perform.
How points are scored
Players score points per map their team plays. The scoring formula rewards rating, kills, multi-kills (3K, 4K, ace), opening kills, and clutches. It penalises low-impact maps.
A player whose team wins a 3-0 sweep doesn't score as much as one whose team plays a full 3-map BO3 — more maps = more opportunities to rack up points. This is a critical insight: map volume matters more than star power.
Five principles for picking well
1. Lean toward teams expected to play deep into the bracket. A grand-finalist plays ~12 maps; an early-out plays 3. Map volume dominates the points equation.
2. Don't over-stack on stars. Going all-in on three high-value players forces you to fill the last two slots with the cheapest options on the board — usually a bad trade.
3. Look at recent form, not season averages. Our fantasy hot picks page surfaces players whose rating is trending up.
4. AWPers tend to over-perform their fantasy value when their team wins — they get more opening kills and impact frags than riflers.
5. Don't pick from a team that has a clear top-rated opponent in round 1 — even if the team is good, an early upset wrecks your map volume.
When to lock in your team
HLTV usually locks rosters at the start of the first match of the event. You CAN modify your team mid-event during published "transfer windows," but it costs you a budget penalty. Plan to lock in once and only change in emergencies (e.g. a player gets benched mid-event).
